Bahrain's teachers could be given up to two weeks off during their spring break under a parliamentary proposal approved unanimously yesterday.
The five MPs behind the proposal, spearheaded by Ammar Qambar, believe that the holiday from January 31 to February 4 is too short and insufficient.
They stressed that teachers deserve a longer holiday after a lengthy first semester starting in October.
They explained that teachers live under the fear of contracting Covid-19 as they often come in direct contact with other members of the faculty, students and parents.
Parliament Speaker Fouzia Zainal agreed to include the proposal despite not having it in writing.
“Teachers have not been given the privilege of doing things online. They have been present in schools since October,” said Mr Qambar.
“The regular spring vacation is two weeks but it had to be shortened to five days for late start of the academic year, but that doesn’t mean teachers don’t deserve longer holidays.
“Should the government reject the proposal, it should give teachers proper compensation later.”
MP Ebrahim Al Nefaei backed the proposal.
