Migraine is the 6th most disabling illness worldwide and the most disabling neurological condition overall
A new support group is being launched in Dubai to help people struggling with migraines, and provide a source of support for patients and families. Migraines can have a huge impact on people’s lives, severely limiting their ability to work and maintain social relationships.
According to the Migraine Research Foundation, migraine is a particularly prevalent neurological disease, affecting a total of one billion men, women and children worldwide. It is recognised as the seventh highest cause of disability and the most disabling neurological condition. Migraine is found to affect women more than men; roughly 1 in 4 women will experience migraine in their lives and 85% of chronic migraine sufferers are women.

Dr. Maravic, neurologist at German Neuroscience Center explains: “we see a very large number of patients at the clinic with migraines and over the years many have asked where they can find a support group, which can help to ease some of the social and emotional toll caused by the condition. This was the main objective for developing such an initiative, where patients can come together and find a shared source of advice and support outside of the medical community.”

He continued: “Migraines are incredibly common, yet many still believe them to be a bad headache and this is not the case. Regularity and intensity varies, but on average they can take place once or twice a month, with some people experiencing much more frequent episodes. Other symptoms can include visual disturbances, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, extreme sensitivity to sound, light, touch and smell, and tingling or numbness in the face. Both medicated and non-medicated treatments are available and the main priority is to get a proper diagnosis so you can work with a specialist to formulate a treatment plan that works for you.”

The free support group sessions take place at The German Neuroscience Center in Jumeirah Lake Towers every month and the next event is on Sunday 18th February at 7.30pm. Contact mail@gnc-dubai.com or call +971 (0)4 4298 578 to confirm your attendance.
