Iraq has cleared all obstacles for the much-delayed Baghdad Metro [also called Baghdad Elevated Train] project, and it has been forwarded to the competent authorities for final approval, the official Alsabah newspaper said on Wednesday.

The project is now “in the hands of” the Planning, Finance and Transport Ministries which will shortly present it to Parliament for endorsement, Baghdad’s Governorate said in a statement carried by the paper.

“We have completed all procedures related to the metro project and have just forwarded it to the competent authorities,” the statement said.

In October last year, a consortium led by French transport giant Alstom, together with partner Hyundai Engineering & Construction, had signed a Memorandum of Intent with the Iraqi Ministry of Transport to define a framework to accelerate the implementation of the Baghdad Metro.
