The project, initiated in 2011, then aimed to construct a 250,000 bpd refinery to meet the province's fuel needs, says a senior government official.

Iraq has decided to revive a major refinery project shelved for years in central Babylon, according to a media report on Thursday.

"Babylon has a comprehensive plan to revive its mega refinery project in central Euphrates, which was suspended for years because of the security situation," Raad Al Jabbouri , Chairman of Governing Council told the national Arabic daily Al Sabah.

He said oil officials in the governorate have already contacted Haider Al-Abadi, the country's Prime Minister, and the competent authorities in Baghdad to revive the project, which will 'create 7,000 jobs.'

He declined to give any further details of the project.

In early 2011, the Iraqi government signed a deal with a Malaysian firm to construct a 250,000 bpd refinery in Babylon to meet the province's fuel needs.

However, the project was shelved because of the ongoing conflict in the country.
