An expansion of the Animal Quarantine Centre in Buri and a revamp of the playing fields in Demistan are among nine multi-million dinar projects planned in the Northern Governorate under the 2021-2022 budget.

Other projects include the expansion of key highways, the development of a sewerage network in Janabiya, and a flyover.

Details of the projects were revealed by Northern Municipal Council’s financial, administrative and legislative committee chairwoman Zaina Jassim who is also the area councillor for Al Qaraya, West Janabiya, Buri and Al Hamala.

The Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry has allocated the budget for the nine projects ranging in cost from BD13,000 to BD22 million, she added.

“One of the projects that has completed the design phase is the expansion of Shaikh Isa Bin Salman Highway in addition to the second phase of developing Al Jasra junction which will cost around BD22,480,100.

“An approval was issued by the Kuwait Fund for Economic Development to re-tender the street expansion project in an open tender and work is underway by the consultant to amend the tender documents for the best implementation.

“This development includes increasing the capacity of the highway to four lanes in each direction from the intersection as well as the development of the junction through the construction of a flyover to turn left from Janabiya Highway to Shaikh Isa Bin Salman Highway.”

The project also includes transportation work, protection of underground service lines and the development of a rainwater drainage system.

Another key project is the BD556,789 expansion of the veterinary quarantine facility in Buri by adding three additional livestock quarries to accommodate around 3,000 heads of livestock with an expected completion date of July 2022.

“Another project that will be tendered in August with the support of the Kuwait fund is the expansion of Janabiya Highway to three lanes on each side for 4km,” added Ms Jassim.

“The designs for a new sewerage network in Janabiya, Block 575 – expected to serve 175 houses – have been finalised and preparations are underway to issue a general tender.

“Work on developing the southern part of the same block (at a cost of BD1,200,000) is expected to start in the third quarter of this year and expected to be completed within 12 months.

“Designs were also completed to connect Wali Al Ahad road and road 1409 in Hamala Block 1014 at a cost of around BD600,000.

”Designs are also 70 per cent to 90pc complete for the BD4m construction of a main sewerage line to connect Al Lawzi Blocks 1203 and 1016 as well as Buri and Hamala which will commence at the end of this year with an expected 24-month completion period.

Sandy roads in Block 575 will also be paved along with the construction of Road 7542, the development of surrounding infrastructure, a rainwater drainage system, speed bumps in addition to improving the lighting and adding traffic signals and warning signs costing around BD2,200,000.
