AMMAN — The Cabinet on Tuesday decided to support UNRWA-run schools by JD1.341 million that will cover the cost of textbooks for the 2019-2020 scholastic year, according to a Prime Ministry statement.

The new financial support is part of the Kingdom's ongoing contributions to support the agency that is suffering financial challenges and accumulative debt to enable it to continue playing its UN-mandated role.

In 2019, UNRWA Jordan provided education services to over 118,000 students attending 169 UNRWA schools distributed around the Kingdom, which are struggling with a large number of Palestinian refugees.

UNRWA’s economic crisis worsened in August of 2018, when US President Donald Trump announced the decision to slash the entirety of Washington’s aid to the UN agency.
