Iraq is planning to build an industrial city in the central town of Karbala to be dedicated to oil-related products, an official was quoted on Wednesday as saying.

The project will be managed by the Industrial Cities Authority at the Industry and Minerals Ministry, the Authority's manager Adnan Al-Ghanim said.

"I have met Karbala's governor and obtained approval for the construction of an oil industrial city...it will focus on oil-related industries and recycling of certain oil products," he told the Iraqi Aliqtisad News network.

Ghannam said Karbala would allocate a land with an area of around 4 square kilometres for the project, adding that another industrial project for non-pollutant products is under discussion in the governorate.
