FIFTEEN Value Added Tax (VAT) violations were registered last night.
A total of 26 commercial establishments across Bahrain were inspected by officials from the Industry, Commerce and Tourism Ministry and the National Bureau for Revenue (NBR).
Violators could face fines of upto BD10,000.
According to an official statement released by the ministry, inspections were conducted in Zallaq, Juffair, Amwaj, Hoora, the Diplomatic Area, and Seef within efforts to ensure proper implementation of the readjusted VAT.
“There has been a positive reaction to the new directives in addition to high levels of awareness and professionalism,” the statement said.
“However, in addition to the 15 violations, there were instances of possible tax evasion.
“Legal proceedings are underway against the violating establishments and those who are found guilty of tax evasion can be jailed for five years and fined three times the amount evaded.”
Meanwhile, the NBR also reaffirmed the importance of adhering to proper implementation of the various stages of the readjusted VAT.
It also urged citizens and residents to submit complaints, if any, through official channels.
Meanwhile, a store was shut down on Sunday for VAT violations. It followed an inspection campaign covering key areas such as Bahrain Bay, Manama Suq, Busaiteen and Jidhafs.
Of the 69 establishments inspected, 55 violations were found.
