Iraq has awarded a project to a Spanish company to build a cement plant at a cost of around $250 million, its Industry Minister was quoted on Sunday as saying.

Manhal Al-Khabbaz said the plant in the Northern Nineveh Governorate would have an initial output capacity of 4,000-4,500 tonnes/day, noting that it could be expanded later.

He told Iraq’s Shafaq News agency that the project would produce new types of cement that are not available in Iraq and would be completed with 2.5 years.

The Minister, who did not identify the Spanish firm, said the plant would cater for Nineveh’s cement needs as the Governorate pushes ahead with post-war rebuilding.

“This is a significant project for Nineveh and we hope to see more such projects by international companies wishing to invest in Iraq,” he said after laying the foundation stones for the project on Friday.
