Iraq is planning to award new contracts for the construction of three housing complexes in its central Babylon Governorate, the official Alsabah newspaper said on Sunday.

Several housing projects awarded in the Governorate over the past two years are progressing “without obstacles” and could be completed shortly, the paper said, quoting Mohammed Jassim, Chairman of Babylon’s Investment Commission.

Jassim said the Governorate had awarded those projects on an investment basis to tackle cash shortages and provide an effective solution to a housing problem that was aggravated by internal hostilities over the past few years.

“Those projects are progressing well…we now have plans to award new investment contracts to build three more housing complexes in the Governorate,” Jassim said without providing further details.

Officials have said Iraq needs at least three million houses in the next five years to bridge a wide supply gap caused by the war and a rapid population growth.
