The Department of Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health & Ageing (MCA) and WHO Guideline Steering Committee chose Dr. Mohamed Mohi El Din to be among the group developing its guidelines concerned with the management of chronic primary low back pain (LBP) in adults. With the aim of providing evidence-based non-surgical interventions, the GDG is comprised of 15 carefully selected experts who will collectively employ their expertise to provide input into the scope of the Guideline, consider and rank priority outcomes that will guide the evidence reviews and focus the recommendations, interpret the evidence with explicit consideration of the overall balance of benefits and harms, formulate recommendations, as well as review and approve the final guideline document before submission to the Guideline Review Committee (GRC). Members of the GDG will serve until the Guideline is completed, which will take approximately 2 years.

Dr. Mohi El Din, Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Cairo University, Head of the minimally invasive spine unit, completed his medical degree at Cairo University’s Medical School; he decided to shift his focus to the spine, 20 years ago, where he established his current academic & clinical practice and in 2021, he established the first minimally invasive spine unit in the Middle East at the Cairo University. Over the years, he became an active member of many national and international professional organizations. A perceptive and keen author, Dr. Mohi El Din has so far written two books, titled An Introduction to Neurosurgery, and Introductory Manual of Neurosurgical Procedures.

This comes as part of WHO’s efforts towards finding sustainable solutions for managing chronic pains associated with the lower back in adults (aged 60 years and over) and establish guidelines that ensure better outcomes on the performance of health systems, especially during these times of building unconventional lifestyles. The guidelines will be targeted towards multidisciplinary healthcare providers in primary and community care settings.

“I am immensely honored to be working alongside a group of global experts towards such a significant purpose. About 8 in 10 people suffer from some form of LBP, making it one of this age’s most common conditions, especially among adults,” clarified Dr. Mohi El Din. He went on to add that “these times are witnessing adults facing increasing health risks due to the spread of COVID-19. Current restrictions are also having a serious impact on their physical health as a result of adopting new lifestyles in more challenging physical circumstances. This is giving experts more reasons to engineer ways in order to enhance adults’ quality of life, and it all starts with having a healthy, pain-free life.”

According to WHO, the appointed group members’ expertise includes relevant technical experts in LBP care, end-users involved in primary health care services who will adopt, adapt, and implement the recommendations, such as physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, chiropractors etc., representatives of groups most affected by the recommendations, as well as experts in assessing evidence and developing recommendations informed by evidence.
