Dubai, UAE: Canadian University Dubai (CUD) has become the first university in the Middle East to secure accreditation for its environmental health management program from the renowned sector organization, ECO Canada.
Alongside international recognition for their Bachelor of Science qualification, the new accreditation will provide CUD students and graduates with access to resources that will support their academic and professional development. It will benefit those graduating this year, as well as all current and prospective students of the program. The accreditation has been awarded on an interim basis, to be formalized with an official site visit when international travel resumes.
ECO Canada is a globally recognized, independent institution that has worked with academia, industry, and government for over 30 years and has accredited post-secondary environmental programs at most of the leading universities in Canada. Its International Post-Secondary Environmental Program Accreditation recognizes institutions for their commitment to high-quality education, accountability, and public trust.
The accreditation award follows a rigorous assessment process that benchmarked the CUD Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health Management against international standards of excellence in environmental practice. The program was recognized by ECO Canada for its alignment with the growing labour market needs of the environmental workforce worldwide.
Speaking about the accreditation, Dr. Yogendra Chaudhry, Vice President of ECO Canada said, “As the only ECO Canada accredited environmental program in the Middle East, CUD’s BSc in Environmental Health Management not only meets the requirements of International Standards, but also aligns well with the Environmental Occupational Standards and Industry requirements. During the accreditation review, we felt the program outcomes are consistent with the labour market needs and the program does an excellent job in preparing students for meaningful employment in the environmental sector.”
The accreditation builds on a number of industry-focussed professional development and applied research initiatives that are ongoing in CUD’s Department of Environmental Health Sciences. In collaboration with CUD’s Faculty of Management and academics at the London School of Economics & Political Science, the Department is involved in a 600,000 dirham project exploring the incentivization of climate change mitigation measures in the GCC.
Students too are taking a leading role in exploring the agenda; earlier this year, an undergraduate research team was the first student group from CUD to have their research published in the Scopus-indexed International Journal of Global Warming. Examining regional trends in temperature and rainfall, the student researchers, Fatma Kamkar, Layla Khawatmi, Aysha Arif and Hamed Hamed, delivered some insightful conclusions suggesting that climate change may be occurring at a regional level.
CUD students have also been undertaking a systematic study of perceptions around environmental policies, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Leeds. The team’s article entitled “Evaluation of Environmental Policy with Q-Methodology” was published in the Oxford Research Encyclopaedia of Environmental Sciences in May 2021.
Dr. Aseel Takshe, Head of the Department of Environmental Health Sciences commented, “These research project came out of our practice-based learning approach, which offers students unique opportunities to collaborate with senior faculty in applied research and to explore both innovation and entrepreneurship. At CUD we encourage and support students to become actively involved in society through environmental and health projects that tackle issues within their community. It is opportunities like this that set up apart and helped us to meet the rigorous employability standards that ECO Canada expect from the programs they accredit.”
