Bahrain - A proposal to hold an urgent open debate on workers in the unregulated labour sector during the Covid-19 crisis has been submitted by eight MPs.

The proposal will be scheduled by Parliament chairwoman Fouzia Zainal for a vote during Tuesday’s session.

Ministers and government officials will be summoned at a later date which will not exceed two weeks if approved.

“We need to know what’s going on with expatriates working illegally on free visas or through flexi permits during the high Covid-19 infection rate amongst foreign workers,” said MP Khalid Bu Onk, who is spearheading the move.

“Regulated workers are taken into account when Covid-19 testing and tracing are done, but details related to unregulated professions are still mysterious since they have no actual address, licensed business location or whereabouts.”
