Call for strict safety measures at markets in Bahrain

Bahrain - MPs are demanding strict measures to be implemented at central markets across Bahrain to combat the spread of Covid-19.

They plan to submit an urgent proposal this week if the Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning Ministry fails to provide stricter entry checks, social distancing stickers and hygiene equipment.

“We shouldn’t be telling any authority to do their job especially when daily infection numbers are currently averaging at 200,” said MP Mohammed Bu Humood, who is spearheading the move alongside four other legislators.

“For example, temperature checks are only taken at the entry at 4am at the Manama Central Market and then employees disappear, with no security guard or any official at the doors.

“Also, social distancing and other hygienic guidelines are not being respected.

“This lack of co-ordination between government bodies is unacceptable and has to be addressed or else we will be forced to take political steps within the next few days.

“No one wants to see tougher measures, we want things to return to normal and this is not helping.”

There are six markets – in Manama, Muharraq, East Riffa, Nuwaidrat, Jidhafs and Sitra.
