A NEW comprehensive electronic system will be launched next year to track medicines from the factory of origin to the final patient, it has emerged.
The mechanism will ensure that fake medication doesn’t enter Bahrain while also guaranteeing medicines – including controlled substances – are prescribed according to protocol.
The Supreme Council for Health selected MVC company to implement the project, revealed a statement by the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) yesterday.
This move comes in line with directives to follow the supply chain of medication according to the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) for all medicines in Bahrain – whether locally produced, imported, or repackaged locally. The specifications are prepared to include the medication’s GTIN, batch number, expiry date and serial number and the company will implement and activate the system to ensure all regulatory pharmaceutical protocols are implemented to provide NHRA with detailed follow-ups of the entire chain from production to point of sale.
“Implementing this system is a pioneering move that will place Bahrain on the global map for preventing the sale of fake medication and ensuring the supply chain is safer,” said NHRA chief executive Dr Mariam Al Jalahma.“We have designed our system in accordance with the European system to inspect medication as the production companies will provide the information without additional charges to NHRA, hospitals, pharmacies and import agents.”
MVC is a Bahraini company founded in collaboration with AVC Global and is available on the Amazon Web Service.According to MVC chairwoman Shaikha Dheya bint Ebrahim Al Khalifa, a highly professional team was brought together to ensure the process is carried out smoothly. She highlighted that due to Covid-19 it has become necessary to ensure authentic and safe supply chains for medication.
