Home furnishing giant IKEA will be opening a new store in the UAE, it has been announced.

Set to open in July 2020 in Al Wahda Mall in Abu Dhabi, the new branch will be the Swedish firm’s second outlet in the UAE capital and the fifth in the country, with a store space of 23,000 square feet.

Al Wahda Mall, which announced the upcoming store opening, said it has signed a memorandum of understanding with representatives of IKEA Al-Futtaim and Line Investment and Real Estate, the shopping mall development arm of retail giant LuLu Group.

The new store opening was announced just as many retailers around the world were shutting their doors due to widespread lockdowns and self-isolation measures against the ongoing risk of coronavirus.

The Swedish retailer had earlier announced it was closing all of its stores in the United Kingdom and Ireland effective March 20, to help stem the spread of coronavirus.

New location

Al Wahda Mall is located in downtown Abu Dhabi, easily accessible to many residents in the UAE capital.

“We will be in the city centre, closer to the people of Abu Dhabi,” said Vinoy Jayan, managing director of Al-Futtaim IKEA.

Last December, IKEA opened the doors to its second outlet in Dubai, just past Ibn Battuta Mall in Jebel Ali.

Although the new branch in Abu Dhabi will be a lot smaller than the 64,800-square-foot store in Jebel Ali, it will still offer a dining area for customers.

“As all IKEA stores, we will offer a wide range of home furnishing ideas with well-designed furniture and home accessories,” a statement reads.
