Cairo – The Egyptian Ministry of Planning and Economic Development has issued a report on the country’s achievements in realizing the seventh goal in the 2030 UN sustainable development goals (SDGs) of producing affordable clean energy from renewable sources including solar and wind.
In this respect, the Egyptian Minister of Planning, Hala El-Said, on Sunday said that the Benban Solar Park in Aswan is the largest of its kind in the Middle East and Africa, with the aim to increase the production of clean energy, and cater to the domestic electricity demand while curbing carbon emissions by two million tonnes per annum.
Spanning across an area of 37 square kilometers, the complex comprises 32 solar power plants, with a total capacity of up to 1,465 megawatts (MW), equivalent to 90% of the energy produced by Aswan’s High Dam, the minister noted.
With investments of $2 billion, the project is expected to create 10,000 direct and indirect job opportunities, mostly for youth.
According to international reports, Egypt has succeeded in providing electricity to all citizens.
he Egyptian government previously approved a long-term strategy with the aim to diversify the country's energy mix, maximizing the share of renewable energy to 42% by 2035, with the help of joint collaborations with national and international organisations.
By 2020, renewable energy is set to account for 20% of Egypt's total generated electricity, backed by the expansion in power generation projects through solar, and also wind energy especially from Gabal El Zeit area in the Red Sea governorate and the Gulf of Suez.
