Dubai-based Emirates SkyCargo’s network has nearly tripled in just a few months on the back of a surge in demand for cargo services.

Emirates airline’s subsidiary reported on Tuesday that its cargo network expanded from 35 to more than 100 destinations between March and July 2020, up by 185 percent in less than four months.

“We have re-grown our network to over 100 destinations with robust flight frequencies to key production and consumer markets,” said Nabil Sultan, Emirates divisional senior vice president for cargo.

During the months of May and June, the cargo carrier operated on average more than 3,800 flights per month, with their planes travelling to dozens of destinations and covering approximately 37 million kilometres.

The company started stepping up its services at the height of the coronavirus lockdown, when consumers were stockpiling groceries and healthcare personnel required more medical supplies and personal protective equipment.

Between mid-January and mid-March, Emirates SkyCargo carried more than 225,000 tonnes of goods, just to supply and replenish consumer essentials and medicines in the UAE. Most of the items were perishables, including fruits and vegetables, meat, seafood, and more than 30,00 tonnes worth of pharmaceutical products.
