Greece's Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis arrives at the European headquarters for the EU-Western Balkans summit, in Brussels, on December 14, 2023. EU and Western Balkans leaders are meeting in Brussels in what is seen as an opportunity to reaffirm the EU membership's perspective of the Western Balkans. The crunch summit in Brussels, which diplomats fear could drag on longer than the two days planned, comes as fears mount over Western backing for Ukraine nearly two years into Russia's war. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen on December 13, 2023 urged the bloc's 27 leaders to back massive financial aid for Ukraine and Kyiv's ambitions for membership talks, ahead of a crunch summit. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced his "satisfaction" Wednesday after an agreement to reform the EU's migration laws was reached, calling it "an important response" to Greece's calls for change.
The agreement "is an important European response to the great national effort to implement a strict but fair immigration policy", said Mitsotakis, the head of Greece's government, during a cabinet meeting.
