LONDON - Britain has "appropriate scenarios" in place for the water industry, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's spokesperson said on Wednesday, declining to comment on reports that Thames Water, Britain's biggest water supplier, could be rescued by the state.

The spokesperson said speculation around an individual company's performance was "first and foremost for them", adding that "in general terms, the whole sector is financially resilient".

"(Regulator) Ofwat is monitoring the financial position of all key water and wastewater companies as you'd expect, and the government always ensures that we would have the appropriate scenarios in place across regulated industries, including water," the spokesperson told reporters.
