Education technology (EdTech) in Saudi Arabia offers huge opportunities, and the amount being spent on the sector is increasing globally.

Abdullah Al Tamimi, CEO, Tatweer Educational Technologies, which is owned by Saudi’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), told the EduTech Digital Summit that billions of dollars are being spent on edtech solutions globally.

The Saudi government will spend SAR 193 billion ($51 billion) on education alone in 2020, he said, and 80 percent of all funds spent on education in the Gulf countries is spent in the kingdom.

“Globally, spending on educational solutions or EdTech gradually increases yearly by 11 percent. It will be $330 billion in 2025. The number was $107 billion by 2015, so there is a really a big increase,” he said.

Tatweer Educational Technologies is a company providing solutions to the educational industry, he said, which sees big opportunities to work with both the private and the public sector going forward.

Al Tamimi said 50 percent of students in Saudi Arabia were working online before COVID-19 restrictions took hold in March, and 100 percent of students were working online after it.

He said the change was a ‘big opportunity’ for the private sector to work in the education sector.
