Nourish, an inflight meal booking platform in the UAE, has secured $400,000 in an investment round that was led by investors from the US, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.

The strategic investors coined the UAE-based firm as UberEats for Airlines, according to a press release.

Founded in 2020, Nourish will use the funding to develop a new information technology (IT) and logistics network for commercial aviation. It also aims to widen its supply chain network across several airports in emerging markets and reinforce its platform by hiring new talents.

Nourish deployed an application that connects airlines to airport vendors and a branded cloud kitchen in the terminals. It also created a new business model for commercial aviation to change unacceptable food quality and choices on planes.

The company recently inked its first agreement with Ras Al Khaimah International Airport in the UAE.

Tom Eliopoulos, a Lebanese-Greek entrepreneur and the Founder of Nourish, stated: “Now passengers will be able to get what they want on the plane…whether that’s sushi, McDonald’s, or even a protein shake…and it will be served to you by the flight attendants at your seat.”

His remarks came during the Future Airport Development and Investment Summit that was held in Riyadh during 7-8 November 2022.

Commenting on the company’s 2023 outlook, Eliopoulos indicated: “We are now engaging food delivery platforms and private equity partners who share our vision for establishing a new supply chain network across hundreds of airports in emerging markets.”

Meanwhile, Neil Ylanan, a shareholder of Nourish, noted: “The flight catering and onboard service industry has significant bottlenecks and the rising costs around operations, particularly special meals, are putting pressure on airlines to better serve their customers.”

Ylanan added: “The overall trend will likely continue toward creating value streams and even more bespoke customer offerings over the coming decade.”

The global market for inflight catering is expected to hit $21 billion in enterprise value by 2026. Nearly 75% of the sector is still serviced by less than 10 major suppliers, most of whom do not accelerate the process to change their prices or enhance food quality.

Many experts believe that the lack of development in the inflight catering industry mainly contributed to approximately 7 million tonnes of food and plastic waste from flight cabin services on an annual basis.
