Qatar-based construction company UCC Holding announced on Tuesday that its joint venture with Egypt’s ElSewedy Electric has been awarded an engineering, procurement and construction contract for a 1,044-megawatt (MW) gas-fired power plant in Libya.

The contract, awarded by the state-owned General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) is worth 1.19 billion euros ($1.3 billion), UCC Holding said in a LinkedIn post on Tuesday.

The post stated that the implementation period of the project is 26 months.

The agreement signed between Ramez AlKhayyat, Managing Director, UCC Holding and Mohammad Al Mashai, Chairman, GECOL.

The state-owned Libyan News Agency said in a related statement on Tuesday that the emergency power plant project, located in Zliten, would comprise of six gas turbines from Siemens Energy.

In February 2022, UK-based news portal African Energy had reported that UCC Holding had teamed up with Germany’s Siemens Energy, Tripoli-based Acesco Consulting Engineering and Services and US-based Hill International for the project.
