(TAP) – Two fields for the production of electricity from solar energy, in Tataouine, have completed their work, with a production capacity of approximately 31.1 Gigawatt (GW) for each.
The most productive field will be connected to the network of the Tunisian Company of Electricity and Gas (STEG).
The two projects have been developed by the Italian company Eni, said the Ministry of Energy.
The first project, located on the outskirts of Tataouine, concerns establishing 30,240 solar panels on an area of ??20 hectares.
These panels are distinguished by their constant rotation towards the sun.
The project is expected to produce 10 megawatts of electricity per day and 22.5 GW per year; its electricity production will be transferred to the STEG grid.
The second project is carried out in cooperation with the Tunisian Company of Petroleum Activities (ETAP) to supply the "Adam" field of oil extraction, which is located in an area not covered by the electricity network in the governorate of Tataouine. It is composed of 16,704 fixed solar panels on an area of ??approximately 10 hectares to produce 5 megawatts of electricity per day and 8.6 GW per year. This project is based on a technology that combines solar energy and the storage of excess production in batteries.
Eni expressed its will to invest in alternative and renewable energy in Tunisia, particularly in the project of connecting the Tunisian electricity network to that of Sicily towards Europe.
That is one of the most important conditions for the integration of renewable energy into the network, in addition to strengthening the connection with the Algerian and Libyan networks, said Eni.
Tunisia adopted an energy transition policy in 2014, aimed at reducing its primary energy consumption by 30% by 2030 and increasing the share of renewable energy in the production of 30% electricity over the same horizon.
To achieve these objectives, Tunisia has adopted a number of measures including the creation of the Energy Transition Fund in 2014 and the promulgation of the law relating to the production of electricity from renewable energy in 2015.
Since 2016, Tunisia has adopted the «2017-2020 programme," aimed at installing an additional renewable capacity of 1000 MW.
