The main tender for construction of an international airport for Saudi Arabia's Red Sea tourism project in Tabuk Province is likely to be issued in the fourth quarter of 2020, a source told Thomson Reuters Projects.

"The design work for the estimated $400 million airport project is expected to be completed by fourth quarter 2020 and the main tender expected to be released by mid-November 2020," the source said.

Last month, the project's developer The Red Sea Development Company (TRSDC) had announced the award of the design contract to Foster + Partners.

The source said the 12-month contract covers both the preliminary and detailed design phases, adding that WSP Holdings is providing the engineering consultancy.

The scope of work includes the construction of runway, passenger terminal, an air traffic control tower, aprons and installation of safety and security systems, a second source told Thomson Reuters Projects.

"Construction is expected to commence by first quarter 2021 with completion scheduled in the fourth quarter of 2023," the second source said.

TRSDC said in its statement last month that the airport would have a peak capacity of 900 passengers per hour.
