Spanish railway company CAF Group announced on Monday that it has been awarded a 180-million-euro ($208 million) contract by Egypt's NAT (National Authority for Tunnels) to refurbish 23 metro trains operated by NAT on 44-kilometre-long Line 1 of the Cairo Metro.

The contract involves refurbishment and maintenance of the metro trains for a two-year period, CAF said in a bourse statement, adding that it is being financed through Spanish export agency FIEM [Corporate Internationalisation Fund].

According to the statement, the scope of the contract includes comprehensive refurbishment of the metro units, encompassing modernization of the main systems and elements related to availability and safety, air-conditioning systems, traction systems and refurbishment of the Kozzika maintenance depot, where the work would be carried out.

CAF said the project would be executed in partnership with Japan's Mitsubishi Corporation, which supplied the trains and with whom CAF and NAT have also signed an MoU for the rehabilitation of trains that currently serve Line 2 of Cairo Metro.

The Cairo Metro network, inaugurated in 1987, is the oldest in the Middle East and Africa and currently has three lines in operation, as well as a fourth line in phase of construction.
