Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) announced on Thursday that the Rabigh-Jeddah-Makkah Water Transmission system project would start operations in the fourth quarter of 2021.

The project, one of the largest potable water transmission systems globally, will meet the growing demand for drinking water in the cities of Jeddah and Makkah.

The 650 km/ 80-inch diameter twin pipeline project with 4 pumping stations and 47 water tanks, will have the capacity to transport 1.2 million cubic metres per day (m3/day) of desalinated water, the company announced via its Twitter account.

Turkey's Mapa Group is implementing the $834.38 million project.

SWCC also tweeted that the basic engineering and construction works of the 600,000 m3/day Shuaiba 5 desalination plant are complete. The project will cater to Makkah and Bahah regions.

Shuaiba 5 was awarded to a consortium of Saudi Arabia's Advanced Water Technology and Rawafid in December 2020. The project, which uses reverse osmosis desalination technology, has been mandated to reduce the electricity consumed for producing a cubic metre of desalinated water to less than 2.75 kWh/m3.
