Oman’s Sohar Port and Freezone, which includes the deep-water Sohar Port, announced on Monday that it has signed a land development agreement with local firm Moon Iron & Steel Company (MISCO).

The Port said in a statement that the overall project will see the construction of 700-metre quay wall for MISCO’s upcoming plant in the eastern area at Sohar Port.

The plant is set to begin operations at the end of December 2021, the statement said.

MISCO currently hosts an annual production capacity of 1.2 million tonnes of high-grade re-bars.

Mark Geilenkirchen, CEO of Sohar Port, said the port is targeting the utilisation of available land as an extension of the current steel and logistics cluster. He said the new MISCO plant will see generation of 250 local job opportunities upon its completion.

MISCO MD and CEO Sasikumar Moorkanat said the development of the land and quay wall for the new plant will facilitate the handling of direct reduced iron as raw material for producing steel, as well as hot-rolled coil, which can be used for engineering applications.

Sohar Port's eastern area, with a land area of over 880,000 square metres, includes plots with waterfront access, according to the statement.
