OPEC oil producer Kuwait will soon sign contracts worth over $1.2 billion for massive clean-up operations in crude-polluted areas in the Northern and Southern parts of the Gulf emirate, a local newspaper reported on Monday. 

The contracts, comprising five packages, would be signed within two weeks with four Kuwait firms which were awarded the projects this year following approval by the Central Agency for Public Tenders, the Arabic language daily Al-Anba said. 

The firms include the Heavy Engineering Industries & Shipbuilding Company, Al-Sayer General Trading & Contracting, Khalid Al-Kharafi Group, and the Kuwait Company for Process Plant Construction & Contracting, it said. 

The projects involve “clean-up and treatment of oil-polluted soil” in North and South Kuwait following the (1990-1991) Iraqi occupation, the report added.
