Bahrain's Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning has awarded The Mall Real Estate Development the contract to invest and develop the Hamad Traditional Market project in Bahrain.

"The ministry has awarded the contract to build the market to our company and the construction will begin in two months", an official at The Mall Real Estate Development Company confirmed to Zawya Projects.

Zawya Projects reported in November 2019 that the project was retendered under the PPP model whereby the chosen bidder will invest and operate the project under a 35-year land lease agreement with the Ministry of Works, Municipalities Affairs and Urban Planning.

The market will be located on a ministry-owned plot of land admeasuring 12,303.8 metres in Block 1212 on Shaikh Hamad Avenue.

The plan for a traditional souq in Hamad Town was first mooted in 2010. The report said the ministry might auction the project as a tender floated in 2014 failed to attract any bid. The project has been cancelled and revived several times since then, the report said.
