State-owned QatarEnergy announced on Monday a light oil discovery in the Jonker-1X deep-water exploration well drilled in the PEL-39 exploration license, offshore Namibia.

The Jonker-1X well was drilled to a total depth of 6,168 metres in a water depth of 2,210 metres, the oil major said in a statement.

The acquired data is being evaluated and further appraisal is planned to determine the size and recoverable potential of the discovery.

The PEL-39 exploration license is held by a consortium consisting of QatarEnergy (45 percent ), Shell (operator with 45 percent) and National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (10 percent).

The discovery came after QatarEnergy made two similar ones in February 2022 in the Graff-1 well and the Venus-1X prospect in the Orange Basin offshore Namibia.

QatarEnergy holds exploration interests in PEL-56 (30 percent) and PEL-91 (28.33  percent) in offshore Namibia, covering a total area of 28,327 sq km.

The Jonker-1X deep-water well is located 270 km offshore Namibia with drilling operations beginning in December 2022.
