Iraq has restarted two large housing projects in the outskirts of its capital Baghdad after they were suspended because of internal hostilities, the official Al-Sabah newspaper said on Monday.
Najmat Baghdad (star of Baghdad) comprises 1,000 houses while Al-Zaitoun includes nearly 1,700 units and both of them are located in Abu Gharib area near the capital, the paper said, quoting Baghdad's governor Mohammed Al-Atta.
"Work has been resumed on those projects, which have been stalled due to the security situation," Atta said, adding that Al-Zaitoun project may be expanded.
Atta disclosed plans to build 6,000 houses in four different locations outside Baghdad as part of a programme to construct at least 200,000 units to bridge a supply-demand gap in the next few years.
