His Highness Sayyid Marwan bin Turki al Said, Governor of Dhofar, will preside over the inauguration of OQ’s ammonia plant in Salalah on Sunday, January 15, 2023. The plant is one of OQ’s main development projects and will contribute to enhancing the utilization of Oman’s natural resources. It will support the economic diversification plans and will boost the export of Omani products to international markets.
Eng Kamil al Shanfari, Executive Director of OQ’s Projects in Salalah, said: “OQ’s Ammonia Plant is integrated with the methanol plant and was designed to retain the hydrogen-rich purge gas generated by the methanol plant as feedstock. The demand for ammonia products in the global markets is witnessing constant growth leading to higher returns and rendering the project highly feasible."
"The ammonia is being used as a key ingredient in the production of fertilizers and is an important intermediate chemical in the manufacturing of synthetic resins, detergents, coolants, synthetic fibers, and polyurethanes, among other applications. Ammonia is also used in the production of green hydrogen, which is a key component of the OQ Energy Transition agenda," Al Shanfari added.
Commenting on the project’s in-country value (ICV) contribution, the official stated: "Like all the main development projects, OQ’s Ammonia Plant has made an effective contribution to enhancing the in-country added value. About $199 million were spent during the construction phase on procurements from Omani companies. Additionally, it has provided training programme that enhanced the capabilities of Omani youth in many fields."
