El Sewedy Education in partnership with the UK's Coventry University opened on Sunday the first phase of its The Knowledge Hub educational project in the New Administrative Capital

The project is being developed at a total cost of seven billion Egyptian pounds ($429 million) over an area of 50 acres and is designed to accommodate 15,000 students.

The 27,000 square metre first phase comprises of engineering , media and design, and computing schools .

"The second phase would be opened by September 2020," said Ehab Salama, CEO, El Sewedy Education.

American architecture firm Gensler has designed the Knowledge Hub, which would be completed in five phases over a seven-year period.

The first phase was inaugurated in the presence of Egypt's Higher Education Minister Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar, who told Thomson Reuters Projects that Egypt is planning to open two international universities in the New Administrative Capital and New Alamein City in partnership with the University of Lausanne, Switzerland.

He said the two universities will offer courses in economics and tourism but didn't elaborate further.

The 175-year old Coventry University was named by The Guardian University League 2018 as the 12th best university in the UK.
