Muscat – Muscat Municipality has invited bids for the Muttrah Square project, which proposes to revamp the iconic area in Muscat completely.

Earlier this year, the project plan won the inaugural Bilarab bin Haitham Award for Architectural Design.

As per the Royal Orders of His Majesty the Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, Muscat Municipality as the implementer of the project called for tenders for its construction.

A statement issued by Muscat Municipality, said ‘We wish to invite companies to compete for the tender for the construction of Muttrah Square project; which will be an innovative landmark in Muscat Governorate.’

The deadline for submission of tenders is February 15, 2023, it added.

Muttrah Square, designed by Abdulla al Bahri, Omaima al Hinai and Ahmed al Jahdhami, was declared the winner of the first edition of the Bilarab award.

All the famous landmarks of Muttrah will be visible from the bridge. The arch bridge will be surrounded by a plaza having a dancing fountain, retail stores and cafés lit by lights blending with the waves of the sea.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Abdulla al Bahri said, “Muttrah Square will enhance the value of Muttrah with an iconic bridge in the shape of an arch looming over the middle of the square besides the sea. It was inspired by the sword of Imam al Salt bin Malik al Kharusi.”

In the first edition of the award, participants were asked to propose a design for the seafront site of Muttrah.

The award aims to facilitate and create unique architectural projects in certain areas of the sultanate with distinctive architectural character that combines originality and contemporary elements and can be adopted on the ground.

The award comes in line with the future vision and aspirations of the sultanate – Oman Vision 2040 – in developing its various regions architecturally according to their geographical environment and civilisational identity.

The award seeks to utilise the environmental and terrain diversity of various governorates, where different themes would be presented in architectural designs targeting annually a specific architectural theme and a specific region or governorate.

The Office of Bilarab bin Haitham Award for Architectural Design has already received 149 entries for the second edition, which involves designing the Maritime History Museum in the wilayat of Sur in the Governorate of South Sharqiyah.
