Dubai, UAE: Panellists from Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) shared their thoughts on the power of sustainable action during a session held at the Future Hub of Global Women’sForum Dubai 2020 in Madinat Jumeirah.
The session also showcased the UAE and Dubai’s efforts in consolidating sustainable energy and its local and global impact. The panel agreed that with sustainability on the rise, women need to be more aware of the great opportunities available within the sustainability space.
Speakers of ‘The Power of Sustainable Action’ panel included Mohammed Abdulkareem AlShamsi, Chief Officer Climate Change & Sustainability, Acting Executive Director of UAE Water Aid Foundation (Suqia) DEWA; Abdulrahman Aljamea, Vice President – Corporate Strategy Risk & Resilience, Strategy & Government Communication, DEWA; Athbeh Hamdan Alshehhi, Sr. Engineer, Climate Change & Sustainability, DEWA; and Maryam Khansaheb, Senior Engineer - Sustainability DEWA. The session was moderated by Christopher Skipper, Partner, Squire Patton Boggs.
The session highlighted the importance of gender equality within the sustainable energy sector. Panellists shared best practices to encourage women succeed in the varied fields of sustainability.
Abdulrahman Aljamea, Vice President – Corporate Strategy Risk & Resilience, Strategy & Government Communication, DEWA, said: “DEWA plays a key role in enhancing the role of women and boosting their capabilities, in accordance with the directives of our wise leadership. Women are key contributors to our success at DEWA, and their skillsets and knowledge help to excel in our field.”
Mohammed Abdulkareem AlShamsi, Chief Officer Climate Change & Sustainability, Acting Executive Director of UAE Water Aid Foundation (Suqia) DEWA stated that since the foundation of the UAE, the leadership has had a vision to advance women across all sectors. “This is now reflected in women’s role as integral contributors to the growth and sustainable development of the country,” he said.
Athbeh Hamdan AlShehhi, Sr. Engineer, Climate Change & Sustainability, DEWA, added: “The UAE supports women across all aspects of the industry, offering them the opportunity to learn, grow and excel in all fields. I encourage women to take advantage of these opportunities and join the effort in building a better and sustainable future for all.”
Maryam Khansaheb, Senior Engineer - Sustainability DEWA, remarked: “At DEWA, I had the opportunity to work on projects and initiatives which helped me contribute to a sustainable future. My message to women is that you do not have to be part of a big organisation to make a difference, even small actions can have a great ripple effect.”
Apart from profiling best practices, the panel also highlighted opportunities to strengthen the sustainability agenda through enhancement of women’s representation within the world of sustainability.
DEWA’s collaboration as Strategic Sustainability Partner reinforces GWFD’s goal to raise awareness on sustainability and the role of women in building a sustainable future for all. The panellist also shed light on the authority’s numerous projects and initiatives aimed at ensuring that future generations live in a clean and healthy environment.
The two-day Global Women’s Forum Dubai 2020 was organised by Dubai Women Establishment, which is led by Her Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the UAE Gender Balance Council and wife of HH Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs.
Building on its theme, ‘The Power of Influence’, Global Women’s Forum Dubai 2020 was focused in highlighting how effective policies and partnerships in four key areas – Government, Economy, Society, and the Future – can further women’s positive impact for a better future.
