This is the highest rating for a young university that has a branch in Dubai

Dubai, June 16, 2012: The University of Wollongong (UOW), Australia, the parent institution of the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD), has been rated No. 33 in the Times Higher Education global list of Top 100 universities aged under 50.

This is the highest rating for a young university that has a branch in Dubai. The University of Wollongong Australia became an independent university in 1975.

The Times Higher Education (THE) Top 100 Under 50 list is a new addition to its World University Rankings portfolio. The results and analysis have been published online by THE and as a special supplement to its magazine.

The analysis is focused on a new breed of global universities rather than the older and more established institutions. The new ranking group looks at universities which have managed to join the world's top table in a matter of years, not centuries, and others showing great promise.

The 'THE 100 Under 50' draws on the same comprehensive range of 13 performance indicators used to compile the THE World University Rankings but only ranks those founded in 1962 or later.

UOW Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Wellings said the announcement was an endorsement of UOW as a research intensive university with a strong commitment to its students and community. "We already have an enviable record of achievement reflected in UOW's position in the top 2 per cent of universities worldwide and now we have another prestigious ranking from the Times Higher Education," commented Wellings.

Professor Ghassan Aouad, President of UOWD, commented: "It is a matter of great pride to belong to a university that is ranked among the best younger universities. This means students in Dubai have an opportunity to benefit from the acclaimed standards and strengths of the parent university."

The Republic of Korea's Pohang University of Science and Technology was rated No. 1 in the list, leading a strong showing for East Asian universities. The THE 100 Under-50 aims to show which nations are challenging the US and the UK as higher education powerhouses - and offers insights into which institutions may be future world leaders.
