Flying to more countries than any other airline, Turkish Airlines first announced its sponsorship of River Plate, the world-famous Argentinian football team, a couple of weeks ago. On Saturday, August 31st , it was reciprocally announced and celebrated with River Plate on a press conference held at River Plate Stadium, attended by Turkish Airlines Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee, M. İlker Aycı, President of River Plate, Rodolfo D’onofrio, Turkish Ambassador to Argentina, Vural Altay, and a large number of press members as Turkish Airlines became the jersey sponsor of River Plate, one of the most prominent football clubs of Argentina.

With this cooperation, River Plate will be participating in its matches with the jersey that carries the logo of Turkish Airlines for the next three years. Turkish Airlines also became the first airline company to sponsor River Plate, also known as “The Millionaires”.

Starting with the Lanús match on August 4, River Plate will be competing in the field with the jerseys adorned with Turkish Airlines logo for the next three seasons.

Emphasizing the importance of the cooperation between Turkish Airlines, which became a global friend of sports and athletes with various sponsorship deals to this day, and River Plate, Turkish Airlines Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee, M. İlker Aycı said; “We have been the airline that flies to more countries than any other airline for a considerable period of time. We reach over 310 destinations spread over five continents. Known for its support to various national and international names, teams and organizations, both professional and amateur, Turkey’s national flag carrier became the sponsor of world-famous football clubs such as Barcelona, Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund along with the UEFA Euro 2016. The Turkish Airlines’ ads with famous athletes such as Lionel Messi, Kobe Bryant and Didier Drogba were also a big hit when they were broadcasted.

River Plate, which Turkish Airlines became the jersey sponsor of, was founded in 1901 and took its name from the common English name for the Río de la Plata. It is Argentina's one of the biggest football clubs having a major number of fans. River's home stadium is Estadio Monumental Antonio Vespucio Liberti, known simply as ‘El Monumental’, the largest stadium in the country with a capacity of more than 66,000 people.

Nationally, River Plate has won the Primera División championship a record 36 times, with its latest title the 2014 Final. Domestic achievements also include 11 National cups, with the 2017 Supercopa Argentina. The team’s achievements in international arena include four Copa Libertadores, one Intercontinental Cup, one Supercopa Sudamericana, one Copa Sudamericana, three Recopa Sudamericana, one Copa Interamericana, and one Suruga Bank Championship.
