Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain - The German Orthopaedic Hospital (GOH), the leading private European orthopaedic centre in Bahrain, successfully organised a symposium last month at the Diplomat Radisson Blu Hotel Residence and Spa Bahrain, shedding light on sports medicine, and treatment and prevention methods of sports injuries.

The symposium, entitled “Hands on Orthopedics”, witnessed the participation of 9 of GOH’s renowned consultants, physiotherapists, experts and specialists, who delivered several lectures in the fields of orthopedics, physiotherapy, sports medicine, osteopathy and sports injuries.

Accredited by the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) for six Continued Medical Education (CME) hours, the symposium was attended by over 200 guests, who included consultants, specialists, orthopaedic residents, emergency and family physicians, general practitioners, physiotherapists and nurses.

Leading medical establishments such as Trilink Medical, Acino International, House of Medicine and Gulf Pharmacies, sponsored the one-day symposium, which was held on January 19.

The day included 9 lectures, open talks and discussions, casting light on several key topics; common sports injuries and disorders affecting muscles, shoulders, knee joints, feet and ankles, in addition to other topics such as evidence-guided best clinical practices for managing sports injuries.

Chaired and moderated by GOG’s Consultant Spine surgeon, Dr. Steffen Haug, the speakers included a lineup of GOH’s consultants, such as Orthopaedic Consultant (Hand, Foot and Elbow) Dr. Christian Reintjes, Orthopaedic Consultant (Shoulder and Knee) Dr. Maik Priester, Orthopaedic Consultant (Hand and Foot) Dr. Michael Mitrovics and Orthopaedic Consultant (Hip and Knee) Dr. Stefan Dragulescu.

The symposium included other presentations delivered by GOH experts, such as resident Osteopath Mr. Henry Brobbey, who spoke to the attendees on ergonomics in sports and physical activity, and the role of osteopathy in treating acute injuries.

Physiotherapist Mr. Daniel Hohls discussed physiotherapy and rehabilitation in meniscal injuries and after Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction, while the therapies and goals in rehabilitation post ankle injury were highlighted in a presentation delivered by Physiotherapist Ms. Isabelle Hildebrandt.

Physiotherapist Ms. Madeleine Martin lectured on treating sports related glenohumeral joint disorders, whereas Mr. Sven Schurrle – a German orthopaedic master craftsman – gave a presentation focused on foot care, custom-made insoles, gait and running analysis.

On the occasion, GOH CEO, Chief Medical Officer and Consultant Anesthesiologist, Dr. Heiner Abel, commented: “We are pleased to organize such a purposeful symposium that benefited more than 200 medical staff and therapists here in Bahrain. Organising the symposium comes within our efforts to share the rich knowledge and expertise of our medical professionals at the German Orthopaedic Hospital with those seeking to advance in their continued medical education, with emphasis on orthopaedics, physiotherapy, sports medicine, osteopathy and bone health. We are looking forward to organizing more similar such events and activities in the near future, as we are keen on contributing to the improvement and development of the medical and healthcare sectors in the Kingdom of Bahrain.” GOH Chief Operating Officer, Stefan James Skrzywanek opened the symposium by welcoming all the participants and outlining the schedule of events. Commenting after the event, Stefan said, “It was a real team effort organizing this symposium, and I would like to thank all my colleagues involved who assisted in making this symposium such a wonderful success. We were pleased to welcome delegates from all over the GCC, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait who all came to Bahrain especially to attend our symposium. Bahrain is an ideal location to stage such symposiums, and we look forward to hosting many more symposiums in the future.”
