Kuwait - Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology in Royale Hayat Hospital conducted a full day symposium on Managing Pelvic Floor Disorders.. CSO/ Head of Women’s Services in the Hospital Dr. Abubakr Elmardi directed the event which took place in AlJouri Hall in the Hospital on 26th, January 2019. The event was accredited by the Center for Continuing Education and Professional Development (CEPD).
The symposium targeted gynaecologists, physiotherapist, colorectal Surgeons, and doctors in training in an effort to explore recent management of pelvic floor disorders, and to be an eye opener for obstetricians and gynaecologists to be aware of the role of colorectal surgeons & physical therapist in pelvic floor disorders.
Participants in the symposiums were Dr. Valentina Giaccaglia Consultant General Surgeon Proctology and Pelvic Floor, Mediclinic City Hospital, Dubai, UAE, Dr. Ayman Elnaqa Consultant Urogynaecologist & Pelvic Floor Reconstructive Surgeon, Hamad Medical Cooperation, Doha, Qatar, Dr. Abdullah Alhaddad Consultant, Colorectal Surgeon Mubarak Al Kabir Hospital / Chairman, Department of Surgery, Dar Alshifa Hospital – Kuwait, Dr. Nawal Al Sayegh, Associate Professor and Acting Chairperson Department of Physical Therapy Faculty of Allied Health Sciences - Kuwait University, and CSO/ Head of Women’s Services in the Hospital Dr. Abubakr Elmardi.
The symposium tackled many topics such as Clinical Applied Anatomy of the Female Pelvic Floor, Pelvic Floor Dysfunctions: Urogynaecologist Perspective, Female Sexual Dysfunctions – A Pelvic Floor Disorder by Dr Ayman Elnaqa, Pelvic Floor Dysfunctions: Colorectal Surgeon Perspective and Rectal Prolapse and Rectocele Repair – Colorectal Surgeon Perspective by Dr. Valentina Giaccaglia, Work Up of Management of Rectovaginal Fistula by Dr. Abdullah Alhaddad, & Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation in Kuwait – A Physical Therapist Perspective by Dr. Nowall Al-Sayegh, and Prevention and Management of Anal Sphincter Injury by Dr. Abubakr Elmardi. At the end of the symposium, there was a question & answer session.
Commenting on the objectives of the event, Dr. Elmardi said that the involvement of physiotherapists with special interest in pelvic floor disorders is important to offer women non-surgical options which may improve their symptoms and prepare them after operative intervention, “it is also to promote Physical Therapy in Kuwait, and to empower women to take hold of their health,” he added
