Qatar University students complete an unprecedented internship program at QPMC

QPMCs operations and procedures are at the forefront of the nations national vision

Doha, Qatar - QPMC Head Office - September 02, 2015

A summer-long internship program  conducted by Qatar Primary Materials Companys (QPMC) that engaged four students from Qatar University (QU), concluded in an award ceremony on yesterday in which they received certificates  of participation and appreciation.

The  internship program was designed to match  the students theoretical knowledge with practical experience in their respective disciplines and prepare them to confidently enter the world of work after graduation.

Business administration student Ali Abdulrahman Al-Mulla was assigned across all QPMCs departments and sites, along with electrical engineering students Mohamed Jihad El-Jaam, and Walid Saber Khamis Jaber who were  also involved in project management.  Computer Science major Khulood Khaled Saleh interned at the IT department.

The ceremony which was attended by the student interns, included highlights from QU representatives and QPMC staff and management on the importance that both organizations place on academic knowledge combined with practical and on-site work.   The students also took part in a panel discussion led by QPMC Administration Director Dr. Latifa Al-Darwish.

Eng. Eisa Al-Hammadi, QPMC Chief Executive Officer, himself a proud QU graduate and alumnus, stated, I am extremely pleased to see how Qatar University is adamant on following up on their students internship program. The student has always been a growing importance at Qatar University. We are therefore pleased to have had QU students intern at Qatar Primary Materials Company.  We look forward to the universitys continued commitment, under the leadership of its president Dr. Hassan Rashid Al-Derham, to ensuring that QU students gain practical experience and to boosting their interpersonal and business skills.

Dr. Latifa Al-Darwish, QPMC Director of Administration, highlighted her Departments keenness on helping the students contribute to fitting into the bigger picture. Its a great reward to see their impact on the success of the business. Through their practical work experience, the interns learn intangible skills as soft skills are not taught in the classroom environment, she said.

Dr. Al-Darwish added, Our aim is also to give students an insight into various disciplines of the professional world and the opportunity to be mentored by experts and this is exactly what QPMC is applying, as part of their career and real world training, which is equally at the forefront of Qatar Universitys objectives. As a Qatar University alumna, it has meant a lot to me to have QU students intern with us for the past year. We look forward to strengthening our relationship with Qatar University and receiving more students this new academic year.

QU Acting Director of Career Services Center  Maha Al-Marri  said, At the Center, we continue to provide QU students with on-site experiences that add value to their current studies and motivate them to make informed decisions on their future careers. This internship program at Qatar Primary Materials Company was an invaluable opportunity for them to appreciate how their theoretical knowledge translates into practical experiences.

Ali Abdulrahman Al-Mulla said, When you work hard for your university degree, you magnify your academic knowledge. When you come to a pioneering company such as QPMC, you bring the abstract theories from the classroom into actual work. I am grateful to QU for this experience to match the theory with practice.

Walid Saber Khamis Jaber said, We were told by our supervisors at QPMC that we bring ideas to the organization. In turn, we were inspired by the wealth of talent and experience we found here.

Mohamed Jihad El-Jaam said, During my internship at QPMC sites, I started to better appreciate the application of electricity and learned a lot about the safety measures QPMC undertakes.

Khulood Khaled Saleh stated, The program gave me the advantage to gain workplace skills and self-confidence and a real field perspective.   She noted that  in their interaction with QPMC staff, the students became familiar with all the departments and were given a clear insight into internal and external communication, all through HR, Marketing, Engineering and Operations.  We also had several opportunities in which  we learned how to create added networking opportunities for everyone in the company, she said.

As a national institution established on an instruction from the Qatari government, QPMCs operations and procedures are closely aligned with the objectives of Qatars National Vision 2030. Being at the forefront of facilitating the construction boom in Qatar, where QPMC stands for quality, reliability and efficiency, building a skilled and dedicated workforce is therefore key to growing the company and enabling it to reach new heights.
