Abu Dhabi: NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) Professor of Chemistry Panče Naumov has been named as a Fellow of the American Chemical Society (ACS) for his outstanding leadership in science, the profession and his exceptional volunteer service in the ACS community.
With more than 161,000 members, ACS is the world’s largest scientific society and one of the leading sources of authoritative scientific information. A nonprofit organization, chartered by Congress, ACS is at the forefront of the evolving worldwide chemical enterprise and the premier professional home for chemists, chemical engineers and related professions around the globe.
Naumov was recognized by ACS for advancing solid-state chemistry and pioneering the field crystal adaptronics that exploits dynamic properties of ordered matter, particularly dynamic, shape-memory and self-healing crystals for all-organic optoelectronics and soft robotics. His nomination as an ACS Fellow was also based on his contribution to the promotion of the field of chemistry in the Middle East, and the establishment of the United Arab Emirates chapter of the American Chemical Society, as well as his dedication and active stance in advocating for peace through chemistry.
Naumov acquired his PhD in Chemistry and Materials Science from the Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2004. His research includes over 240 publications that have been cited more than 6,300 times.
As the founder of the ACS UAE Chapter, Naumov helps facilitate the work of chemists from both academia and industry throughout the UAE, with the aim of promoting the study and research in chemistry in the region.
He currently serves as a board member for several signification organizations such as the European Crystallographic Association (ECA), the International Society of Bioluminescence and Chemiluminescence (ISBC), the International Conference on the Chemistry of the Organic Solid State (ICCOSS) and several peer-reviewed journals. He is also a member of the Mohammed bin Rashid Academy of Scientists (UAE) and the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK), among others, and is a reviewer of over 60 international journals and several international funding agencies.
The professor said about his appointment by ACS: “It is a great honor to be recognized by the world's largest scientific society, and I am very fortunate to be part of an academic institution and major research university that elevates the study of chemistry in the region. NYUAD is committed to the advancement of the society through science, and I am privileged to play a part in this mission.”
An internationally acclaimed academic and scientist, Naumov is a recipient of Harvard University's Radcliffe Fellowship, Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Asian and Oceanian Photochemistry Association Prize for Young Scientists, Japanese Ministry of Science Fellowship, and Global Center of Excellence Fellowship, among other honors and awards. He has recently received UAE's 10-year Golden Residency Visa.
