Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada) has completed 72% of Mafraq-Ghuwaifat Road project. The project work is going in accordance with the project plan, the delivery of Phase One of the project will be during 2016, while the project is to be completed by mid-2017. This is driven by Musanada's keen interest to incorporate the visions of H.H. Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates and in implementation of the directives of H.H. / Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Deputy Supreme Commander of Armed Forces, in line with Plan Capital framework and one of its main objectives to provide an effective transport system serves the Emirate and its economy and integrate land transport networks and services through a sustainable infrastructure as per the international standards.

In this connection, Eng. / Hamdan Ahmed Al Mazrouei, Acting Road Director at Musanada states: "The AED 5.3 billion project teams are working 24/7 to deliver work as per the project plan in consideration of the road significance in linking the Western Region cities and facilitating the commercial transport on the international road". He also adds: "the project includes 6 packages, with a manpower of 8500 consultants, Engineers, and workers. It also encompasses construction of 16 new interchanges, undertake improvement work to the existing interchanges at Mafraq, Hameem, Abu Al Abyad and Madinat Zayed interchange, as well as huge improvements on the existing interchanges to bring the total improvement work up to 246 km long, which extends from Mafraq to the international borders with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Ghuwaifat and the industrial hub in Ruwais".

"The project encompasses construction of new lanes in both directions, from 2 to 4 lanes in each direction along 182 km extending from Mafraq until Baynounah Forest Area, and from two lanes to 3 lanes in each direction along 64 km extending from Baraka until Ghuwaifat".

"Furthermore, the project encompasses construction of lay-by parking for road users, work is in progress to execute a shoulder on the right side for both directions for emergencies. This is as well as construction of underpass for camels in areas of proximity to Silaa and Ghuwaifat, which will serve camel owners in areas adjacent to the road and the camel race track close to Silaa".

Advertising campaign to maintain safety

In same context, Eng. / Faisal Al Suwaidi, Director of Main Roads Division in the Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport maintained: "In accordance with its plan to maintain safety of road users, proportional to the urban development and population and economic growth in the Western Region, the Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport delivers strategic projects contribute to the environmental sustainability of Abu Dhabi as well as the traffic safety". He adds: "The project completion ration could not have been achieved without the continuous and constructive cooperation of all strategic stakeholders".

Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada) and in collaboration with the Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport and The General Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police and since the inception of the project in March 2014 has launched a campaign aims to introduce users to the new detours, raise awareness and promote the significance to adhere to traffic rules in order to maintain safety of road users. This has been further supported by provision of illustrating plans for the newly implemented detours and junctions, freeways and roads with existing work.

Compliance with Environmental Sustainability Standards

As part of Musanada's commitment towards the standards of Green Sustainability, the Mafraq- Ghuwaifat Road Project will be supplied with (LED) system for roads and junctions lighting, which will play part in reducing the power consumption to a minimum of 60%.

Coordination with Government Entities

Musanada works closely with Abu Dhabi Government agencies and companies, in order to facilitate work progress and obtain the required approvals for infrastructure utility lines on roads. The project captures far-sighted follow up from the Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport to promote direct collaboration and speed up the necessary approvals. Meetings and site visits are organized regularly for this purpose.

Further to that, coordination is made with other government agencies. Recently, a meeting was held with Abu Dhabi Distribution Company (ADDC) and Abu Dhabi Transmission & Despatch Company (TRANSCO) resulted in practical solutions to reduce costs and complete projects within the approved budgets and speed up the approvals processes for work progress through application and adoption of Engineering value.

Opening of new detours

Recently, detours for Phase Three in section 4B, which extend from the Truck Road Interchange with 4 km long were opened as well as detours for Phase Two from the Truck Road Interchange until Madinat Zayed with 80 km long, leading the vehicle route to be off-track. In addition to that, a Development and Auditing Committee for traffic safety standards has been formed at work sites, whereby Musanada provides qualified traffic groups for round-the-clock monitoring of traffic movement, ensuring that it is not affected by the works being executed along the road. These groups provide rapid response and assistance to road users in case of traffic accidents.

It is worth mentioning that detours and traffic safety performance is being monitored by safety and assistance patrols (By Musanada) and the Traffic Engineering team in Abu Dhabi Police along the road and around the clock. Further to that, Abu Dhabi Police traffic patrols follow up detours performance after execution and comments were sent and implemented to ensure improvement of roads traffic safety levels.
