Arab Advisors Group released a new report: “Mobile Payments in the Maghreb Region” which analyzed the mobile money and mobile wallet services offered by cellular operators and non-financial institutions in the Maghreb region, specifically in the countries: Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, and Tunisia. The report, which was released in November 2021, answers the following questions:

  • What are the mobile payments available in the Maghreb, and what are their offerings?
  • How are telecom operators involved in mobile payments?
  • Who are the key non-financial mobile payment providers and what are their offerings?
  • What are the recent key events in this sector?
  • What are the significant mobile payment indicators in Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia?

“Mobile payments in the Maghreb region serve a variety of purposes. On one hand they are an instrument for financial inclusion of those who remain unbanked. On the other hand, they empower people who were losing faith in their banking systems or were obstructed in reaching financial services due to political strife in their countries,” noted Ms. Hiba Rabadi, Arab Advisors Group’s Deputy General Manager. “What we have seen is that this is an emerging sector in the Maghreb, with great disparity between countries like Tunisia and Morocco who have multiple offerings, with those who are yet to be engaged such as Mauritania.”

“There is great potential in the field of mobile payments in the Maghreb Region. Telcos are playing an influential role in this emerging sector. Our studies revealed that 9 of the 16 cellular operators in the Maghreb launched mobile payment services, whether mobile money, mobile wallets or DCB. In addition, mobile payments are beginning to benefit the economy. In Morocco for example the national M-wallet platform had 2.45 million registered accounts in 2020, with 1.4 million transactions in December 2020 with a total value of US$48.5 million,” said Ms. Dana Shekem, Arab Advisors Group’s Analyst.
