A webinar targeting secondary school students, educators and the public was organised by the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre (RGSC), this morning, in Bell Village, in the context of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, commemorated on 11 February annually. The theme of the webinar was ‘Water Unites Us: Perspectives from Mauritian Female Scientists’.
The objectives of the webinar were to promote female scientists working in Mauritius as role models for secondary school students; to value the contribution of scientific work for society; and to encourage young people to embrace scientific careers.
The focus of this year’s event was on the recognition of women and girls as agents of change in view of accelerating progress towards the achievement of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean water and sanitation for all.
During the webinar, emphasis was laid on science and technology involved in water management and treatment as well as opportunities in the Exclusive Economic Zone. Three resource persons from the Mauritius Oceanography Institute, the Wastewater Management Authority and the Water Resources Unit delivered short presentations on their work in their respective institutions. Participants had the opportunity to interact and ask questions.
It is recalled that in 2015, the UN General Assembly declared 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in a bid to achieve full and equal access to, and participation in, science for women and girls, as well as further realise gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. The theme chosen by the UN for 2022 is ‘Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion: Water Unites Us’.
