United Arab Emirates, Sharjah: About 97 teams celebrated the spirit of unity in diversity by participating in the second edition of the Labour Sports Festival. The festival organised by the Labour Standards Development Authority (LSDA) Sharjah in conjunction with the Sharjah Sports Council and Reach Target Co. provided an opportunity to all public and private sector workers to participate in a variety of sporting activities.
An astounding success, the event unified several hundred blue-collar workers of Sharjah, by providing them with an avenue to engage in a series of sporting events aimed at bolstering relationships, spreading positivity while encouraging a healthy lifestyle through some exciting games.
The festival aligned with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah and witnessed a massive turnout from employees of both government and private institutions. Held each Friday over three months since it commencement on December 28, some of the sporting events in the festival included cricket, hockey, football, basketball and volleyball.
Approximately 31 football teams, 12 basketball teams, 12 volleyball teams, in addition to 30 cricket and 12 hockey teams participated in this year’s event that was held on the grounds of the Sharjah Sports Council Stadium located at the National Park.
Teams that made it to the top three were awarded on the final day of the event, which took place on March 22. HE Salem Yousef Al Qaseer, Chairman of LSDA yet again graced this year’s event and said: “This event served as an ideal platform for workers to put to rest their work stress, come together in unanimity and play some exciting games. While the festival gave them an opportunity to play their favorite sport, it also underlined the importance of team spirit and spreading positivity.”
With so many deserving qualifiers, few fought it hard to make it to the top three of the games. In football, Dnata took home the winners title followed by National Paint and European Union B bagging the second and third position respectively. 11 warriors were named Cricket champions this year and right behind them were the Emarat sixers and Kateel friends. Dubai Duty Free were titled the Volleyball champions of the evening and following them were Lacnor and Success Point University taking the second and third positions respectively. Champion CBL emerged basketball winners, with AFEPL and Al Nadha Boys right behind them in the second and third spots. Lacnor hockey club made it to the top spot in the hockey championship with Abu Dhabi mix hockey team along with Sharjah Tigers followed behind taking the second and third positions.
This year the organisers had also designed particular areas for friends and families who were present to cheer their family members at the games. Special fittings were installed in each of these areas for families to sit back and watch their loved ones on the field.
Overall, the initiative received overwhelming feedback from participants who not only made suggestions to introduce more games but are already eagerly looking forward to next year’s event.
