Dubai: Growing number of patients in the UAE are suffering from kidney stones. The worst part about suffering from kidney stones is the fact that the stones tend to recur. In fact, patients with stones have a 50% chance of forming another stone within few years of the first instance.  And for those that have experienced the pain resulting from the stone are often highly motivated to prevent a recurrence.

The occurrence of kidney stones or urolithiasis is high in the Middle East region, primarily because of a combination of two factors – diet and environmental conditions. Animal protein rich diet leads to higher levels of factors that give rise to the stone’s formation. The risk is further aggravated by the dry and hot weather conditions in the region which result in lower urine volumes.

According to Dr. Muthanna Alrawi, Consultant Urology, Canadian Specialist Hospital, “The occurrence of kidney stones in our part of the world is pretty high, almost 10 – 15% of the UAE residents end up being diagnosed with the condition. It gets worse for the patients as those who have had it once are at a higher disposition for the disease to recur. For all my patients with previous history of stone formation, I advise the 24-hour urine analysis which can provide us with a clear snapshot of the composition of the urine, and we can alter their medication and therapy best suited for their needs”.

For the 24-hour urine analysis, the patient needs to collect his urine for the entire day at the comfort of his home or work place. The analysis then records the level of the content of the urine through-out the day and classifies it among the stone formation enhancing and the stone formation inhibiting ingredients. The ratio of the levels of these ingredients will let us know about the reason for stone formation and how best to prevent its occurrence ever again.

Talking about how else to reduce formation of kidney stone, Dr Alrawi added, “Apart from medication, the diet plays an important role in helping prevent the recurrence of the kidney stones. Patients need to ensure that their daily intake of water is sufficient, especially during the summers.”

Tips for patients to prevent kidney stones

  • Drink at least 3 liters of water daily. Increase the amount during the summers.
  • Decrease salt intake in diet
  • Decrease red meat intake
  • Reduce intake of dairy products to moderate amounts
  • Reduce tomato from diet
  • Increase movement and exercise
