Dubai, UAE - Firoz Merchant, Chairman and Founder of Pure Gold Group received two awards by the Indian Business Professional Council (IBPC) for his contributions and achievements. The “Business Excellence Award” was given for his outstanding leadership in business and the “Philanthropic Icon Award” for his contribution to society.
The awards were presented by H.E. Dr. Thani Bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Cabinet Member and Minister of Climate Change and Environment, Government of UAE.
“Merchant is a true son of India. We are proud of the way he has helped Indians as well as members of other communities in the UAE in their times of crisis. He has not only proved himself a successful businessman but also a very kind community social worker. He is a man with a heart of gold,” said Bindu S Chettur, President IBPC.
He is the only Indian to be to be felicitated with a dual award by IBPC.
Merchant dedicated the award to all the Indian expatriates in the UAE, “I am honoured to be recognised by IBPC, an organization that has tirelessly worked to shine the spotlight on hard working Indian professionals and entrepreneurs in the UAE. As an expatriate who has been blessed with success in this country, I consider it my solemn duty to give back to the community. This desire has motivated me to help people of all nationalities and religion in the UAE, especially, those whose dreams were shattered when imprisoned for debts; these prisoners are not criminals but they were unable to pay back due to unfortunate circumstances. I will continue to help such people and others, in whatever way I can.”
Since 2008, Firoz Merchant, Founder and Chairman of Pure Gold Jewellers, has spent Dh 15 million to pay off the debts and providing airfare for 10,940 prisoners languishing in the country’s jails. These prisoners belonged to all religions and nationalities and were in prison because of their inability to clear debts even after completing their terms.
Earlier, this month, UAE Interior Ministry also honored Firoz Merchant for his philanthropic efforts. Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, presented Merchant the “Community Service Medal” at the ministry’s headquarters, in recognition for his service to community in the UAE and beyond.
