Doha: Qatar Biomedical Research Institute (QBRI), part of Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), is accepting applications for its Summer Research Program 2019. As part of its commitment to capacity building, QBRI is offering intensive training opportunities in specific fields of biomedical research to exceptional undergraduate students.
Program interns will gain hands-on laboratory research experience and will learn to conduct scientific research, formulate ideas, design experiments and test hypotheses under the supervision of QBRI researchers. Interns will work on projects that span applied sciences in three main research areas, including diabetes, cancer and neurological disorders.
Dr. Omar El-Agnaf, executive director at QBRI, said: “QBRI’s work is aligned with and forms an integral part of Qatar’s vision, which is to use education in building the foundation for a resilient knowledge-based economy. The Summer Research Program cultivates an environment that encourages scientific discovery, and we believe the program will foster the students’ scientific and professional development, giving them the opportunities they need to make meaningful contributions to the field of science.”
The students can choose from two batches in this eight-week program, which runs in the period of May 5 - June 27 and May 19 – July 11 respectively. The program will offer undergraduate students a chance to experience the challenges and prospects of scientific research, and help contribute to QBRI’s work in pioneering healthcare in Qatar.
Now in its fifth year, the program is designed to develop students’ critical thinking, as well as enhance communication and team-building skills. Participants will receive valuable mentoring and career counseling throughout the program to support their educational goals and career development.
Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar (CMU-Q) Biological Sciences student of the class of 2019, Najlaa Al-Thani, said: “Thanks to QBRI’s Summer Research Program, I gained invaluable research experience and technical skills and meaningful connections with important research scientists who have supported me in my career and even extended my experience in QBRI by allowing me to continue my Senior Research Project with them.”
QBRI is at the forefront of Qatar’s medical research initiatives. The institute earned regional recognition when it was awarded the prestigious ‘Arab Best Research Institution of the Year 2017 Award’. QBRI aims to improve and transform healthcare through innovation in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting the Qatari population and the region.
