Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: Pediatric Residency Program at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC), part of the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA), the UAE’s largest healthcare network, has earned Emirati Board Accreditation from the National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS).

The SKMC Pediatric Residency Program has become the first program in SKMC, and among the first group of programs in the UAE, to achieve NIHS Accreditation.

Earlier this year Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) was the first teaching hospital in the United Arab Emirates to be accredited by the National Institute for Health Specialties (NIHS); a medical accreditation body that acts to lead, regulate, and organize the professional development of staff working in the UAE’s healthcare sector, emphasizing specialty training. Located within United Arab Emirates University, NIHS is governed by a Board of Directors chaired by His Excellency Hussain bin Ibrahim Al Hammadi, the UAE’s Minister of Education.

SKMC’s Pediatric program is now accredited by the Arab Board of Medical Specializations, the Jordanian Board, the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education-International (ACGME-I), and the National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS), and is currently preparing for a Royal College of Physicians of Canada - Pediatric accreditation application.

“The Pediatric Residency Program maintains a strong clinical teaching unit structure on its wards, competency-based curriculums across all of its subspecialty rotations, and an effective continuity clinic arrangement for its residents. It has a well-established Academic didactic program and its residents regularly meet their program targets in Quality and Safety audits and scholarly activity. Their annual survey results consistently remain above the national averages and Arab Board exam pass rates and American Academy of Pediatrics In-Training exam (ITE) results are high. It remains a strong and consistent program.” stated Dr. Sareea Al Remeithi, Pediatrics Residency Program Director at SKMC.

“We are proud of the tremendous success of our Pediatric Program. I would like to commend and applaud the Pediatric Residency administration and faculty for their consistent support of the program. The cohesive working relationship between the program administration, faculty and residents has resulted in a positive training and working environment that is clear to all site visitors and auditors when they come to SKMC. The Pediatric Institute champions its residents and fellows” stated Dr. Maha Al Fahim, Chair of Education at SKMC.
